Home Air Quality Testing
You may not see it but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Mold spores are microscopic. They’re similar to the size of bacteria. Your body may show signs of mold exposure before you see any visible mold growth. Every mold treatment should begin with a thorough visual inspection. Then if no visual mold is found, getting your air quality tested is the next reasonable step. Air quality readings provide insight into the severity of your mold problem. The goal with every one of our treatments is to guarantee air quality that is completely free of dangerous mold spores and to bring all mold spore levels back down to healthy levels. Our Mold Testing Process
All of our mold testing is evaluated by a nationally known independent third-party laboratory. We make sure the results you receive are completely unbiased and won’t lead to unnecessary mold treatment. Here’s how our testing process works:
1. Mold samples are taken
Depending on which tests you decide are applicable, we perform tests and get you the results back within a few days to two weeks. If you suspect mold but it isn’t yet visible, an air test will determine if mold spores are present. Contact swab testing is useful for mold that is visible. These tests are submitted for an EMMA evaluation which takes a bit longer to process but looks for a wide variety of toxic molds as well as looks for 15 of the worst mycotoxins. Either test will confirm the presence or absence of mold in your home, give you an idea of amounts but also give you an indication of what types of mold we’re dealing with.
2. Off-site analysis
The samples are sent to nationally known laboratories for examination. Because mold spores are mere microns across, they’ll need to be viewed under a microscope or broken down via a DNA evaluation. The laboratory will be able to determine the type of mold and the extent of its growth. Off-site analysis typically takes 3-4 business days for air test but up to 2 weeks for the DNA EMMA evaluations.
3. Results and next steps
Once we get the testing results back, we email them directly to our customers and then call them to go over what it all means over the phone. Depending on the results of the testing, we’ll determine a course of action to take and establish an estimate for remediation if need be. We always do our best to look for the cause of the moisture. If the source has been identified, we’ll begin the steps to make sure it’s rectified and then treated. If it wasn’t easily identifiable, we may recommend deeper investigation looking for an underlying moisture issue that hasn’t shown its ugly head yet.
What To Expect During Testing
Free visual inspection and consultation:
When you schedule a free visual inspection and consultation with us, we look at and evaluate any visual mold concerns in the home. We use a moisture meter to evaluate if any building materials are currently wet. Additionally, we peak in the attic and crawl space for any common problems that contribute to moisture in homes leading to mold. Furthermore, we answer any questions and educate our customers on how complex mold issues can be.
Air testing service call:
This includes 4 air tests. We take 75L samples of air through a cartridge with a calibrated machine in various parts of your home. Then, we send all tests off to be evaluated through a 3rd party laboratory. We usually get the results within 3-4 days (we can also rush and have results within 24 hrs for additional cost); at which point we email the results directly from the lab and go over them verbally with the customer to interpret the results.
There is a $350 service call fee for first 4 tests. We always sample outdoor air to give us a baseline of mold levels in the local area. We recommend testing the attic and crawlspace as those areas are out of site and mind but often have humidity issues and is generally where mold can take a foothold and slowly infect the rest of the home. Please note each additional test is $50 and for the average home 5-8 tests are recommended depending on the size of home and how thorough each customer wants to be.
EMMA testing:
We also offer an EMMA test. this takes a swab of visible mold. It is evaluated through a different process where they break things down to establish the DNA of the molds in the sample as well as look for a variety of mycotoxins. These tests are very helpful when working with a Dr trying to determine the cause of your exposure after getting mold toxicity testing. These are a bit more expensive at $400 per test and also take a bit longer as processing times can run anywhere from 5 to 10 days.
Warranties
Rescom Restoration offers the best mold removal warranties in all of the Portland Metro Area – any treatment performed through Rescom will include a 90 Day warranty. If any mold becomes present in the area we treated within the first 90 days, Rescom will come back and retreat the area 100% for free.
